ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is honored to have formed many wonderful community-based partnerships over the past 85 years. Whether administering our Z-HOPE program or giving financial assistance through our National Educational Foundation, we do so with the understanding that service to the community is our greatest legacy.

Elder Care Initiative strives to provide education and awareness about preparing for your senior years. The African American community is least prepared when it comes to retirement, estate planning and understanding the legal and financial preparation needed to care for parents, grandparents and ultimately, for our own long term care. It is a comprehensive program that also focuses on elder abuse awareness, financial peace, supporting the caregiver and volunteering at senior care facilities.

Elder Care Initiative Partnerships

Stork’s Nest is a 46-year-old partnership between Zeta Phi Beta and March of Dimes. Stork’s Nest is a community-based, prenatal, health promotion program for low-income pregnant women. The program is designed to promote prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during pregnancy through two components-incentives and education. Stork’s Nest clients “earn” points toward incentives, such as maternity or baby care items, through a variety of positive, health-promoting activities; attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, keeping appointments for well-baby visits,, etc. Thousands of women are serviced at Stork’s Nest all over the country every year.

Alpha Delta Zeta’s Stork’s Nest Service

Zeta Prematurity Awareness Program (ZPAP) occurs annually during the entire month of November in support of the March of Dimes’ Prematurity Awareness Month and World Prematurity Day on November 17th. Since 2003, Zeta chapters and auxiliaries reach out to over 300 houses of worship annually across the country and distribute information on prematurity awareness, causes of prematurity and the importance of seeking prenatal care in an effort to decrease infant mortality and the number of low birth weight babies. Over the past six years, Zeta has documented a global impact of reaching more than 543,000 people through the Sorority’s signature grassroots campaign.

Adopt-A-School allows members of Zeta Phi Beta to identify low performing schools and provide assistance in a number of ways to enhance the educational experience, increase test scores and grades. Members purchase supplies and/or equipment, provide volunteer hours, assist with parent engagement programs and work with administrators to identify needs that may be specific to that particular school.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, kicks off our campaign to distribute information in our communities on identifying signs of elder abuse and where victims can go for assistance. According to Ageless Alliance, 1 out of 10 older adults are victims of abuse. Members throughout the country place informational table tents in restaurants, businesses, churches and libraries all over the country.

International Women of Color is one of five components of Z-HOPE. The programming benefits include support for those with AIDS and those caring for AIDS victims, literacy programs, building water wells, donating rice and much more. We have built more than 52 water wells throughout Ghana. We have recently launched a Well Maintenance program to ensure that our wells are consistently functioning and providing potable water to the villages. We also built a clinic at the Afua Kobi Apem Senior School for girls in Ghana. Enrollment at the school went from 1,200 to 2,000 after opening the clinic. Villagers can also visit the health center and often do. The clinic has dramatically improved the health of the girls and their families.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer -While triple negative breast cancer can be found in any ethnicity, breast cancers found in African American women are more likely to be triple negative. This form of breast cancer is more aggressive and often labeled more difficult to treat. It has also been found to occur disproportionately in young African American women. Zeta chapters have begun adding information about triple negative breast cancer to existing projects and programs on breast cancer to build awareness and support efforts of health care professionals and organizations recommending earlier breast health testing.

Zetas Helping Other People Excel

Z-Hope

Z-HOPE

Zetas Helping Other People Excel was approved at the 2008 National Boule as the National Service Program of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

It is an interactive holistic multidimensional outreach program designed to enhance, cultivate and empower participants to develop health promoting lifestyle choices across the lifespan. The program is specific to the following population groups-Women, Youth, Seniors, Men, and International Women of Color.

Why Z-HOPE?

  • When one reviews the “State of Black America”, it is evident that there still is much work needed to eliminate the disparities. In spite of America’s technological advances, Black America continues to experience more preventable diseases and ills.
  • There is no dispute that health (physical, mental, and spiritual) impacts one’s ability to work, live, love and just exist.
  • Focusing the collective Zeta service efforts ‘upstream’ on increasing awareness and prevention, will surely either decrease occurrences or lessen their impact!
  • Empowering people to become active partners in improving the quality of their life is our goal! Information and knowledge in an understandable manner is POWER.
  • Z-HOPE’s uniqueness is that Zetas will take the programs/activities to the community-to existing groups rather than rely on people to come to us!
  • Z-HOPE promises to provide culturally appropriate activities in the communities we live to empower and promote HOPE (Helping Other People Excel).

Finer Womanhood Observance

ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED

One of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s four principles, the organization has publicly commemorated Finer Womanhood since Soror Eugenia Chiles submitted plans for a national celebration at the 1923 Atlanta convention. This celebration has continued to be a major focus for Zeta. Formally defined as “the distinguishing characteristics of a woman—one superior in kind, quality or appearance, marked by or affecting elegance or refinement,” Finer Womanhood celebrates the very best of womankind. Zeta members hold with great reverence the concept and practice of Finer Womanhood. The Finer Womanhood Observance is a time when Zetas around the globe bring before the local community programs that emphasize the national theme. Traditionally many chapters honor outstanding community members, attend worship services and host youth cotillions and musical programs as a part of the celebratory activities.

Finer Womanhood begins the last full week of February and extends through the month of March to   draw attention to the Sorority’s most unique ideal.

Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter

Blue Revue

Blue Revue originated in the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Zeta Chapter in 1933. Chapter charter members Dr. Helen Wilson Johnson and Mildred Davis initiated the first Blue Revue and then introduced the idea at the Sorority’s 1933 national convention. The idea was adopted as a national program and implemented by chapters of the sorority across the country

Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter’s distinct Blue Revue program promotes scholarship and service through its biennial presentation.  The program is an evening of dining, pageantry and recognition of servant community leaders.  During the event, the chapter awards collegiate scholarships to eligible members of its sponsored undergraduate chapters.

Alpha Delta Zeta Debutante Cotillion

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter has sponsored the Debutante Cotillion for over sixty years.  The cotillion became one the chapter’s signature events in 1958 during the tenure of Mrs. Hazel Tucker Jones as President.  The first chairperson for the cotillion was Past President Mrs. Clara Alexander Jackson, whose vision was to provide opportunities to teach young ladies to be self-confident, respectful, and poised adults.

Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter staged its first Debutante Cotillion in December 1958 at the Masonic Temple on Lynch Street in west Jackson.  Since its inception, the chapter continues to screen highly qualified young ladies for this prestigious celebration. The young ladies are selected by the Sorority to cultivate and develop sound character, social principles, and strong career aspirations. These tools serve as a foundation so these young ladies will be a positive impact on society as they grow into adulthood. The Zeta Debutantes are prepared for the presentation by attending charm, etiquette, and professional clinics sponsored by the sorority and engaging in community service activities.  The purposes for making the Presentations are predicated on the following precepts:

  • To broaden the participants’ knowledge of social mannerisms, etiquette and charm
  • To promote the qualities that enhance finer womanhood
  • To formally introduce young ladies to society.

The recruitment period traditionally opens in August.  Classes and rehearsal run from October through December.  The Debutante Cotillion is held annually the first Saturday in December.  The debutantes, escorts, parents, guest and chapter members enjoy a reception following the presentation.
