ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was organized at Howard University in Washington D.C.: on January 16, 1920 as the result of encouragement given to our five Founders by Charles Taylor and A. Langston Taylor, members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.  These Sigma brothers felt the campus would benefit by the development of such an organization as sisters to the fraternity.  Thus, Zeta and Sigma became the first and ONLY official Greek-letter sister and brother organization.

Zeta began as an idea conceived by the five Howard University coeds.  Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Anna.. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. It was the ideal of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was oft quoted to say “[In the ideal collegiate situation] there is a Zeta in a girl regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and principles, a good scholarly average and an active interest in all things that she undertakes to accomplish.”

Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Zeta’s national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change.

A nonprofit organization, Zeta Phi Beta is incorporated in Washington, D.C. and in the state of Illinois. The dues and gifts of its members support the Sorority.

Over the years since the sorority’s inception, Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters and initiated thousands of women around the world. Zeta has continued to thrive and flourish while adapting to the ever-changing needs of a new century. Despite the Great Depression, discrimination and segregation and a host of other challenges, Zeta has continued to hold true to its ideals and purpose, for, as stated by one of the Sorority’s founding members: “…I believe that no [other] organization could have been founded upon principles that were so near and dear to all of our hearts.” (Founder Myrtle Tyler).

Since its inception in 1938 through the present, there have been twenty-five (25) dynamic Chapter Basilei – ladies of vision, high moral character, and determination. Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter is pleased to have encouraged a total of forty-two (42) sorors within its ranks to become Life Members with seven of those becoming Golden Life Members and four becoming Diamond Life Members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter has chartered seven graduate chapters. The seven chapters are as follows: (1) Beta Xi Zeta – Biloxi, MS; (2) Nu Zeta – Meridian, MS; (3) Delta Chi Zeta – Lorman, MS; (4) Gamma Gamma Zeta -Columbus, MS; (5) Zeta Upsilon Zeta – Holly Springs, MS; (6) Zeta Psi Zeta – Clarksdale, MS; and (7) Gamma Beta Zeta – Brookhaven, MS. Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter sponsors two undergraduate chapters: Lambda Beta Chapter on the campus of Jackson State University (1948) and Nu Beta Chapter (1950) on the campus of Tougaloo College. The chapter also sponsors the Jackson Amicae Auxiliary (Friends of Zeta) as well as all three national youth auxiliaries: Archonettes, Amicettes and Pearlettes.

The Phenomenal ladies of Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter have been serving the Greater Jackson Metropolitan Area community since 1938.  We are a group of women dedicated to making a positive impact in the community through our everyday actions of promoting the sorority’s principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. Since the creation of our chapter, Alpha Delta Zeta has been making significant headway in our outreach, service and support to the community.

Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter, working in conjunction with the sorority’s national programs, has contributed much of the cultural, educational, religious, civic and social development of the State of Mississippi through various activities, including but not limited to – the first Debutante Presentation for young black ladies and Stork’s Nest for low income pregnant women.

Some of our charitable projects have included visits and contributions to: Given Dental Service to the needy children, Hot Lunches in the Jackson Public Schools, American Red Cross, NAACP, United Negro College Fund, After School Tutoring, Stork’s Nest, Cottage Grove Nursing Home, MDOT (Adopt-A-Highway), CEEN-A-TEAAM (Adopt-A-School), Salvation Army Metro Jackson (Angel Tree and Bell Ringer), St. Jude of Hope, MLK Global Day of Service, Get Engaged, Military Appreciation Week, Voter Registration Drives and many more.

The chapter owns and operates a tutorial complex at 4410 Hanging Moss Road; provided political support to elect the first female judge in Mississippi in 1989 (Soror Patricia D. Wise), the first elected Black female Circuit Judge in Jackson in 1998 (Soror Tomie T. Green), and the first elected Black female District Attorney in the State of Mississippi in 2001 (Soror Eleanor Faye Peterson).

In February 1949, Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter initiated its first Dental Health Program during the presidency of Soror Mable Roseman Sims. Dr. Mavis Jones, first woman dentist in the State of Mississippi, was consultant and dentist for the project. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons were designated as “Children’s Day”. The project was made possible from funds raised through the “Zeta’s Blue Revue”.  The local chapter has hosted its Blue Revue in April 2004. On March 13, 1976, the local chapter initiated the Stork’s Nest at Mary C. Jones Neighborhood Community Center on Whitfield Mills Road, with Soror Forestine Robinson, chairperson; Soror Jessie Bishop, co-chairperson; and Soror Rosie Thompson, Basileus. In January 2003, the local chapter relocated its Stork’s Nest in the Jackson Medical Mall (Suite 3130) under the auspice of Soror Barnie A. McGee, Basileus. In January 2004, under the foresight of Soror Barnie A. McGee, Basileus, Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter went global by launching its website. (www.adz1938.org)

Since its inception, Alpha Delta Zeta has made great strides in the Jackson Metropolitan communities. Alpha Delta Zeta is proud of the following distinctions:

  • In 1976, Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter was the first chapter to implement the Stork’s Nest Program, a partnership with the March of Dimes, in the State of Mississippi.
